Cigna members will begin with a 30-minute initial telehealth visit, followed by an in-person office visit within a few days.

AETNA IN-NETWORK LACTATION VISITS
I’m happy to be an in‑network provider with Aetna and to support you on your breastfeeding/chestfeeding journey. Below is a straightforward overview of how Aetna typically covers lactation services and what to expect.
What Aetna CoversMany Aetna representatives tell families they have “6 lactation visits covered at 100%.” In practice, this benefit is usually tied to the billing code S9443, and it does not always equal 6 separate appointments.
Key points:

• 6 units per plan year:
  Aetna typically allows 6 units of S9443 per plan year. Each visit is often billed as 2 units (one for you, one for your baby), which usually works out to about 3 full lactation visits per year.
  
• Family‑level tracking:
  These S9443 benefits are tracked at the family level. Visits for you and/or your baby that are billed under S9443 all draw from the same shared pool of covered units.
  
• Multiple providers use S9443:
  S9443 is used by multiple types of providers, not just IBCLCs. OB/GYNs, pediatricians, and hospital‑based providers may also bill S9443 for lactation‑related services, so some or all of your covered units may already have been used before you see me.
  
• Other “free” benefits may count:
  If you’ve taken a “free” online breastfeeding class or received a breast pump through your insurance, those may also count toward your 6 covered codes.
  

Because neither you nor I can see Aetna’s internal tracking in real time, there are situations where:

• Aetna confirms that lactation visits are a covered benefit,
  
• But when all claims from different providers finish processing, your S9443 pool is already used up,
  
• And Aetna then applies part of my fee as your responsibility, according to your plan (deductible, coinsurance, or uncovered amounts).
  

When I’m in‑network, I always bill Aetna first. If Aetna later determines that your S9443 benefits are exhausted or applies other plan rules, you may receive a bill from my office for the portion they assign as your responsibility.
You’re always welcome to book more visits if you need extra support. After your covered units are used, Aetna will apply your plan’s cost‑sharing (deductible, copay, or coinsurance) to additional visits.
What to Know Before Booking

• Check your benefits:
  Insurance plans vary. Please review your Aetna plan or contact Member Services to understand your coverage and any potential out‑of‑pocket costs.
  
• Ask about S9443 specifically:
  For the clearest picture possible before booking, you can call Aetna and ask:
  
  • “How many S9443 units have been used so far this plan year?”
    
  • “Which providers have billed S9443 so far (OB, pediatrician, hospital, lactation)?”
    
  • “How many S9443 units remain available under my plan?”
    This is still not a perfect guarantee—Aetna’s final decisions depend on how they process claims after your visit—but it can help you understand your likely coverage.
    
• Billing & patient responsibility:
  I have a billing specialist who submits claims for you, but “covered” does not always mean “paid in full.” Deductibles, copays, or coinsurance may apply.
  
• If only your baby is covered or if you’re out‑of‑network:
  Self‑pay will be required.

UNITED HEALTHCARE IN-NETWORK LACTATION VISITS
I’m happy to be in-network with most United Healthcare (UHC) commercial plans, making it easier for you to access professional lactation support.
What to Know

• Lactation consultations are typically covered as preventive care for many UHC commercial plan members.
• Both you and your baby are billed separately for each visit, so everyone gets the care they need
• Coverage details—including referrals, preauthorization, and any possible costs—depend on your specific UHC plan.
• Important: EPO plans list me as in-network but won’t pay for my lactation service code S9443 from my NPI, so those visits are self-pay, payment collected upfront.

Before You Book

• Please check directly with UHC to confirm your lactation benefits and any requirements for coverage.
• Make sure both you and your baby are covered under a UHC commercial plan.
• If your baby is not on your policy, additional fees apply.
• I am not in-network with UHC Medicaid plans.

Important NoteI'm in-network for UHC Choice EPO per the provider portal, but services (CPT S9443) are typically not covered.

Horizon BCBS, Anthem, and Cash Pay Clients: Out-of-Network Options
If you have Horizon BCBS or Anthem, it’s important to know that I am not in-network with these insurers. This is very common in New Jersey, as most plans do not credential IBCLCs. However, you can still access lactation care with me:
Self-Pay & use your out of network benefits
Book directly with me and pay out of pocket. My self-pay rate is $300 for an initial visit and $250 for follow-ups. You’ll receive immediate, expert support tailored to your needs.
After your visit, I’ll provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Many families have success with this approach!
How Self-Pay Works:

• Pay $300 at the time of your initial visit ($250 for follow-ups).
• Receive a superbill for insurance reimbursement.
• Submit the superbill to your insurer and follow up as needed.
• If your claim is denied, you can appeal. I will provide any documentation you need.

Tips for Reimbursement:

• Have your written benefits statement ready when contacting your insurer.
• Keep detailed notes of your conversations, including names and reference numbers.
• Escalate to a supervisor or case manager if needed.
• You may file a complaint with the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance or your state board if you believe your claim was unfairly denied.
